What is Tasmota? Smart home without mandatory cloud services
Open-source firmware, local control and open interfaces: learn how Tasmota works and how compatible smart-home devices can operate independently of the manufacturer's cloud.
BASICS
What is Tasmota?
Tasmota is free open-source firmware for many smart-home devices based on Espressif chips, particularly ESP8266 and various ESP32 models. On supported hardware it can replace the original firmware and enable local control.
The project was started by Theo Arends and grew from Sonoff-MQTT-OTA into a comprehensive solution for plugs, switches, lights and sensors. Available features depend on the hardware in use.
Cloud or local control?
The main difference is how a device receives commands. Both approaches can be useful, while Tasmota is particularly attractive for local automation.
Cloud-basiertes Smart Home
Some functions require an external service provided by the manufacturer.
Lokal mit Tasmota
With the appropriate setup, devices communicate directly within the local network.
MORE INDEPENDENCE
Your home. Your data.
Many conventional smart-home solutions use external servers. Tasmota can control compatible devices locally without requiring a manufacturer account for normal local use. MQTT and HTTP provide interfaces for custom automation.
This also reduces dependence on manufacturer services. Cloud services have been discontinued in the past, causing affected devices to lose important functions. Local firmware can reduce this risk.
Cloud-free does not automatically mean completely secure or anonymous: network protection, enabled services and regular maintenance still matter.
OPEN INTERFACES
Tasmota and Home Assistant
Tasmota communicates with Home Assistant via MQTT. An MQTT broker such as Mosquitto usually handles the communication. The official Tasmota integration can automatically discover supported devices and their functions.
This lets you control plugs and relays, read measurements and include devices in automations. The available entities depend on the device.
OPERATION
One web interface instead of many apps
The device interface is normally available through its local IP address in a browser. Here you can manage Wi-Fi, MQTT, supported device functions and firmware updates.
A console is available for advanced settings. No additional manufacturer account is required.
STEP BY STEP
How to set up a Tasmota device
1. Power on the device and, if it is not yet configured, connect to its Tasmota Wi-Fi network.
2. Enter your Wi-Fi credentials on the configuration page.
3. Open the device's new local IP address.
4. Configure the device template, MQTT and other functions if required.
5. Optionally connect the device to Home Assistant.
The process may vary by model and firmware. Preconfigured devices often require fewer steps.
IMPORTANT
Not every Wi-Fi device supports Tasmota
Compatibility depends on the chipset, hardware revision and available firmware. Check compatibility before purchasing or replacing firmware. Work on mains-voltage components must be carried out by a qualified person.
MAINTENANCE
Updates and configuration
Tasmota is actively maintained and can be easily updated through its web interface.
Several maintenance options are available:
- Backup: Back up your configuration before updating.
- OTA: Update the firmware via a server.
- Upload: Manually upload a firmware file.
WHO IT IS FOR
Who is Tasmota suitable for?
Tasmota is particularly suitable for people who use Home Assistant or a similar platform, want to operate devices locally and configure home automation flexibly.
Some technical understanding is helpful, especially for MQTT, complex device templates or self-flashed firmware. Devices supplied with Tasmota are a practical starting point for beginners.
Frequently asked questions about Tasmota
Does Tasmota work without the internet?
Yes. Many basic functions work entirely within the local network. Internet access may be needed for online updates or selected external services.
Is Tasmota free?
Yes. The open-source project is licensed under GPL-3.0.
Does Tasmota work with Home Assistant?
Yes, including through MQTT and the official Tasmota integration.
Can I continue using the manufacturer's app?
Usually not in the same way after replacing the firmware. Specific limitations depend on the device.
Does Tasmota support Matter?
Matter is available on suitable ESP32 hardware and builds, but not on ESP8266 or every device.
Conclusion: local control with less dependence
Tasmota provides a flexible foundation for locally operated smart-home devices. Combined with Home Assistant, functions from different manufacturers can be used and automated together.
