You will use the Dongle Plus as a ZigBee 3.0 gateway in open source platforms to manage different devices from different brands or to flash the firmware of your router to increase the range of the network. What is the current status of multiprotocol support?
Multiprotocol remains an experimental feature and is not recommended for use.
When Nabu Casa introduced the SkyConnect, they announced plans to release firmware that would support multiprotocol functionality. This firmware enables the Silicon Labs chip in the device to communicate with both Zigbee and Thread networks via a single radio module. Since December 2022, this experimental firmware has been available. However, extensive testing by Nabu Casa has shown that, while it works under certain conditions, it has technical limitations that may lead to a compromised user experience. Therefore, Nabu Casa currently does not recommend using this firmware, and it will remain experimental for the foreseeable future. Instead, the focus is on ensuring that dedicated Zigbee and Thread firmware provides the best possible user experience.
If you currently have the multiprotocol firmware installed but are not actively using it to connect to Thread devices, Nabu Casa recommends disabling multiprotocol.
For current users of the multiprotocol firmware who are satisfied with their experience, nothing changes. The experimental multiprotocol firmware will remain available but is not recommended for new users.
If you only need Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA integration, we recommend the product with the standard firmware.
